Sheikh Adil Edrisi is one of the 25 globally recognized potential young scientists to be awarded for the Green Talents Awards-2019, which has been supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany. He is exploring possibilities to restore and utilize the marginal and degraded lands for biomass and bioenergy production and meanwhile regaining its various ecosystem services for environmental protection and sustainable development in India. He is focused to address multiple UN-SDGs associated with land restoration and sustainable bioenergy production in Indian scenarios through multidisciplinary approaches. He is utilizing the application of geospatial modelling to classify, explore and sustainably manage the degraded lands for bioenergy production and regaining other ecosystem services via conservation and restoration practices. To this, he has screened various multipurpose, perennial plant species and developed a novel spatial technique for a strategic tree plantation across India. He has also proposed the management strategies towards the invasive plant species for halting the biodiversity loss in the ecosystems and maintaining its viability, which aimed to protect the ecological systems. He has further developed different soil quality indicators for different types of degraded lands. Through his interdisciplinary approach, he conducted the ecological profiling of degraded lands, so that policy makers can adopt inventive measures for the site-specific restoration of these devastated sites. Therefore, Adil is very much interested in exploring the different multidisciplinary dimensions of geospatial modelling, restoration ecology, soil sciences, socio-economics, policy outlining for the restoration of degraded lands and bioenergy production.
Before joining Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Adil has worked as Post-doctoral Research Associate at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, India. Prior to that he has also worked as a Visiting Research Fellow at Beijing Normal University, China (2017) and Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Indonesia (2018) and completed his Doctoral Research from Banaras Hindu University, India in 2019. He has completed his MPhil in Environmental Science and Sustainable Development (2013) and MSc in Botany (2012) from Banaras Hindu University, India. Besides the Green Talent Award, Adil has also been honoured with the NASI-Springer Award in 2018 provided by the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) for the best research in his field. He has also been awarded the National Travel Grant from DST-SERB, Govt. of India to present his research in Slovenia. Currently, he is also delivering his role as editorial as well as review board member for various international peer-reviewed journals of different prestigious publishers like Elsevier, Wiley, Nature Publishing Group, Springer, Plos, Cell Press, Taylor & Francis. Apart from his contribution in various publications, he has co-authored in the book published by International Resource Panel-United Nations Environment Programme (IRP-UNEP) and serving as an active member of various international organizations including IUCN Commissions (CEM, CEC and CEESP) for tackling global challenges in sustainability.
