Behavioural Economics Lab
Some of the most interesting questions in economics aren’t about markets or money, they’re about how people actually think and choose.
Who we are
The Behavioural Economics Lab is where those questions get tested, offering a controlled environment for studying individual and group decision-making. Students design experiments.
This kind of practical exposure is what separates knowing a concept from understanding it. Reading about a in a textbook is one thing; watching how people actually respond when the choice is real is another entirely. Labs like this give students the chance to test assumptions directly, rather than accepting them on faith, which is ultimately what turns theoretical knowledge into applied skill.
A curriculum built around this kind of practical work is what turns students from passive learners into people who can actually apply what they know.
What we do
Run experiments at scale
The Lab is equipped with more than 30 centrally managed, networked computer workstations, allowing researchers to conduct simultaneous and interactive experiments. Every session is designed to maintain participant privacy and experimental control throughout.
Work from a space built for research
A dedicated waiting area keeps participants comfortable before a session begins, while a separate control room allows researchers to coordinate and monitor experiments as they unfold.
Contribute to real research
Experiments conducted in the Lab have shaped research in strategic decision-making and decision theory, giving students a direct hand in work that extends beyond the classroom.
Get support from experiment design to execution
The Lab supports faculty and student research at every stage, offering experimental-design assistance, participant recruitment, and specialised research software.
Learn across disciplines
Reflecting TSLAS’s interdisciplinary ethos, the Lab also hosts workshops and classes in fields such as political science, psychology, philosophy, and computer science, facilitating hands-on learning through classroom experiments, research-methods workshops, student projects, and research-assistant opportunities.
Get involved, your way
Students may engage with the Lab as participants, researchers, or members of its wider academic community.
