To promote a better understanding of the legal, social, and psychological aspects of transgender rights in India, Thapar School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (TSLAS) arranged an online session titled "Understanding the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026: Law, Lived Realities, and Psychological Implications." Views on legislative advances, personal experiences, and the more general issues of equality, inclusion, and dignity in society were all brought together throughout the session.
The two-hour session focused on the provisions of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, and the proposed Amendment Bill, 2026. Discussions explored the gap between legal frameworks and the lived experiences of transgender individuals, with particular emphasis on intersectionality, social inclusion, and mental well-being. The event also highlighted the role of students and professionals in fostering inclusive and affirming environments.
The session featured Ms. Prajakta S. H., therapist, trainer, and Founding Director of Amala Jeevan India Foundation, and Mr. Deepesh Sonwara, former Central Armed Police Forces officer, legal advocate specialising in POCSO and PoSH cases, and trainer. Drawing on their professional experiences, the speakers discussed legal developments, community perspectives, and the psychological implications of public policy affecting gender minorities.
The interactive session encouraged participants to engage with questions on social justice, identity, and equality, reinforcing the importance of informed dialogue and empathy in addressing issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community.
